Film Spotlights True Story of Iranian Woman's Stoning

02 July 2009

Many of us think of stoning as a form of punishment practiced in ancient societies. But the stoning of women - and sometimes men - is still happening today in many countries in the Middle East and Africa.

Mozhan Marno plays Soraya, an Iranian woman who is stoned to death

Are you concerned about health warnings for paracetamol?

Use of New Zealand's most widely taken painkiller, paracetamol, is being reviewed because of concerns in the United States about side-effects that include liver damage.

Three advisory committees have advised the US Food and Drug Administration to reduce the single maximum dose of the common painkiller - known in the US as acetaminophen - from 1000mg to 650mg.

~~~~~~~~~
Overdosing on paracetamol could lead to liver damage or failure and people didn't realise how harmful it could be.
"It is a gruesome way to die."
Britain and Iran's Fraught History
By Paul Reynolds
World affairs correspondent, BBC News website
Hardline protest outside the British embassy in Tehran - 23 June
Many in Iran are deeply suspicious of the British.
The mutual expulsion of diplomats by Iran and Britain shows that relations between these two old antagonists are alive and bad.
The expulsions started on the Iranian side when two British diplomats were expelled with the usual claim of "activities incompatible with their status".
Ayatollah Khamenei has recently been highly critical of the UK.
RM3.1 billion refunded to taxpayers by IRB
Maria J.Dass, Thu, 02 Jul 2009
KUALA LUMPUR (July 1, 2009) : A total RM3.1 billion has been refunded to 323,517 taxpayers as of June 28.
Hasmah Abdullah
Inland Revenue Board (IRB) CEO and Director General Datuk Hasmah Abdullah said this involves about 70% of taxpayers who had submitted their returns via the e-filing system, which makes the whole process of disbursing refunds faster as well as the process of collection more efficient.
There are currently 4.5 million active registered taxpayers in the country.
As of June 30 a total 1.5 million taxpayers had submitted their returns via the e-filing system compared to 1.1 million in 2008, almost 700,000 in 2007 and only 184,593 in 2006.
Maria J.Dass
Hasmah said in months to come taxpayers will be able to access their accounts online and even check on the payments made by their employers into their accounts.
"This is currently in the developing and testing stages right now," she said.
Hasmah also said that the number of late submissions had also reduced considerably however she observed that the late submissions of Borang B (for businesses) were from tax agents who dropped off bulk submissions at the very last minute.
"I suggest that business owners convince their tax agents to do online submissions the next time around because this will not only be faster but will also allow business owners to check the details and status of their submissions online," she said.
Ayam Goreng Ungkep.- Istimewa
Bahan :
1 ekor ayam, potong 8
5 ulas bawang putih
6 ulas bawang merah
1 ruas kunyit
1 sdm ketumbar
1 sudu teh lada putih
1 sudu teh jintan manis
sedikit lengkuas
1 inci halia
3 biji buah keras
(Kisar halus kesemua bahan di atas)
segenggam kelapa parut (lebih pun tak apa)
2 batang serai yang diketuk
garam secukup rasa
air kelapa untuk merebus ayam
cara:
Masukkan ayam yang telah dibersihkan ke dalam periuk. Leburkan kesemua bahan di atas termasuk air kelapa ke dalam periuk berisi ayam tadi. Air kelapa mestilah sama paras dengan ayam. Rebus sehingga air kering. Tutup periuk dengan penutupnya. Api jangan besar sangat, nanti air cepat kering dan ayam belum empuk lagi. Biar perlahan.
Bila ayam sudah empuk dan air kering, keluarkan ayam. Goreng ayam itu. Sekejap saja, jangan goreng sampai hagus. Apabila kesemua ayam selesai digoreng, goreng pula bumbu yang ada dalam periuk itu sehigga garing Kemudian taburkan di atas ayam goreng tadi.
Petang tadi aku buat ayam goreng ungkep ini. Bukan aku yang buat hehe.. Aku tanya ros, kau pandai buat ayam goreng ungkep tak. Dia jawab, bisak. Wah..beres. Semua dia buat dari awal hingga ke akhir. Aku tinggal makan saja. Sampaikan terlupa nak ambil foto. Gambar di atas tu aku pinjam dari pakcik gugel. Orang indon puNya blog. Mintak-mintak dia tak datanglah sini.
A Look Back at Iraq and the Iraqi Blogosphere: 2006
Year in Review: 2006
In 2006, three events easily stand out above all the others. In February, the Golden Mosque in Samarra was bombed; in June, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed by US forces; and in December, Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death and then was hung in Baghdad. The destruction of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra had by far the most far-reaching consequences. Because of that event, no Iraqi would ever want to live through a year like 2006 again. And yet, the bombing was in reality the culmination of tension between Sunnis and Shiites that had been building ever since the fall of Baghdad. For Sunni and Shiite Iraqis, the years after the fall of Baghdad had been uneasy and tentative. Shiites began to assert power, while Sunnis tried to hold on to power.
I received these pictures from a very close sister living in Medina, Saudi Arabia, and could not help but think of that ayah.
The scene is from a Sinkhole in Guatemala, which National Geographic reported as being around 330 feet or approximately 100 meters deep, and around 500 yards wide. It swallowed up to a dozen homes and killed around three people. They remain uncertain of the cause, though the effects are quite undeniable.
Woman Loses RM19,000 to Cyber Lover
KUALA TERENGGANU: Tuesday June 30, 2009
A 28-year-old woman who fell in love with a “cyber Casanova” lost RM19,000 after being duped into parting with her savings to help him start a business.
The woman had never met the stranger, purportedly from Ireland, and only corresponded with him via e-mail.
She had believed that the cyber love affair was genuine after he asked for her hand in marriage and pressed her to part with a sum amounting to thousands of ringgit, said to be for capital to set-up a textile business in Malaysia.
State commercial crime chief Supt Azmi Adam said the man had told the woman that he planned to have the business in the country to secure her future after they got married.
One of Islam's Greatest Threats is Dick Cheney And Those Who Bow to Him
.............
But, no. It’s Cheney. The well-spoken and forthright Dick Cheney has been making the talk show and lecture circuit rounds sounding the alarm that Obama is making the Western world less safe from terrorists. Every former president and vice president for the past 200-plus years has managed to keep his mouth shut and let the new administration do its job. But Cheney feels an obligation to tell the world that the new administration is ready to let terrorists win.
How does this make Cheney a threat to me? He invokes the memories of 9/11 at every opportunity, reminding Americans that nearly 3,000 people died at the hands of Islamic extremists. We should never forget the events of 9/11 and who perpetrated those crimes. But there’s a difference of remembering and honoring the dead and using the tragedy as crass exploitation to wage fear.
Good vs Evil Slant to Iran Elections
Monday, June 29th, 2009 02:04:00
Now Western media is furious over clashes between Iranian police and protesters, which were perhaps expected given the warning Iranian authorities had issued against demonstrating in protest of the election results. The level of violence may vary, but police clash with protesters everywhere in the world, including the numerous anti-US demonstrations in South Korea, Pakistan and the United Kingdom.
When it happens in Iran, however, the world gets furious.
In my city, Cairo, State Security policemen usually far outnumber protesters and easily crack down on them.
They sexually harass protesters; when my female friends attend a protest, they make sure to wear pants beneath their skirts to make it more difficult for plainclothes police forces to do so. Yet, global media reports of infamous incidents of protest crackdowns in Egypt are mild. These are just small stories in the Middle East section of BBCNews.com or CNN.com.
Sara Khorshid (sarakhorshid@gmail.com) is an Egyptian journalist.
